Notice of Upcoming Demolition of 29 East Vine Street

December 3, 2023

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

In the next few days, you will begin to see the demolition of the blue house at 29 East Vine Street in Oberlin, next door to the Evans House.  This property is owned by the descendants of Wilson Bruce Evans, and managed by the Evans Home Historical Society, which holds a long-term lease on it.

The Evans Home Historical Society has worked in conjunction with the descendants to determine what to do about this property, which has suffered from neglect. As we explored our options, we learned that the house has significant structural issues, and poses a health and safety hazard to the community.  Unfortunately, after careful deliberation, we found that it was not economically feasible to rehabilitate this structure, either as a residence or as a phase in the larger project of creating a museum and educational center in the Wilson Bruce Evans House next door.

We regret that we have lost this piece of our neighborhood, but think that we will make good use of the expanded campus for the Evans House where we are “Rehabilitating 33 East Vine Street, Reshaping Our Future.”

For more information, please email me at carol.lasser@evanshhs.org, or call me at 440-935-2998.  I will be happy to talk with you.

Thank you,

Carol Lasser
